Small Arms Survey asked me to write a policy paper for them to shed light on the increasingly fragmented and complex landscape of Syrian opposition groups. So, I am off to southern Turkey now to do some field research. I am hoping to interview knowledgeable observers, but also members and commanders of some of the armed groups themselves. With only two weeks of fieldwork and keeping in mind that it has to be a short brief, I can only scratch the surface, but who knows what further research might follow.
